Dog's skin yeast infection returned and looks worse. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 4 years and 9 months old | 60 lbs

My dog was previously diagnosed with a yeast/fungal infection of the skin, he was given a steroid and antibiotic as well as an antifungal/antiseptic shampoo to help clear it up. It went away for a few weeks and I noticed it coming back so I began to use the shampoo again, where the yeast spots were previously just red and a little inflamed they are now wet with a slight discharge and the yeast smell is worse! Is it normal for the yeast to look worse before it gets better?

This is not normal and indicates that the infection was not cleared with the original treatment. This happens frequently with fungal infections, because it often takes long-term medication to completely clear the infection. I recommend scheduling a recheck appointment with your vet. They will be able to advise on the next step in the treatment process. I hope that helps and Coda gets better soon.
