How can I get my scared stray cat safely inside from the cold?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female

Hi! There is a stray cat around my house that I feed. But it’s been very cold and rainy, so I’ve been trying to get him into my house so he can dry off, get warm and take him to a vet to get a check up. He’ll get half way in, get scared and run away. He’s a very sweet cat and always loves to be petted. How Can I get him in the house so he’ll be safe from this weather? And I attached a picture, so could anyone possibly get me an idea of the kind of cat he is? Thanks!

Hello and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. What a beautiful cat and creative name! This looks like a dilute tortoiseshell (tortie) and is most likely a female. I would provide a box outside near where you are feeding her so that she will be more likely to hang around. As she gets more comfortable with you and more used to human contact, you may eventually be able to keep her inside the garage and then eventually inside the house. Some cats who already have a taste of outside can be difficult to keep strictly indoors and might constantly try to escape.
