My puppy ate baby Motrin and is throwing up. Does she need a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bernese Mountain Dog | Female | unspayed | 42 lbs

My 42lb Bernese puppy got into baby Motrin. It had spilled on a towel and absorbed, but then she licked the spot. Threw up last night three times, and won't eat breakfast or drink water. Don't know if I can get her to a vet ASAP, as I'm away at work and can't leave. Can this wait, or is it as big as a problem as the internet makes it out to be?

Motrin can be very toxic to the kidneys and gastrointestinal tract in dogs, but the toxicity is dose dependent. At 25 mg/kg we can see stomach and intestinal ulcers and even perforations. At >100 mg/kg the medication can cause severe kidney failure. 25 mg/kg for Susie would be 477 mg, and that would mean she would need to lick over 2 tsp of the Motrin off the floor to ingest a toxic dose. It may be that something else is causing her vomiting and decrease in appetite, and I would recommend having her seen by a veterinarian. If you think Susie may have ingested over 2 tsp I would recommend taking her to a veterinarian ASAP. If she is otherwise healthy it may be okay to wait until you are off work.
