My cat has a severe leg fracture, but only one callus. Why?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 3 years old | 7 lbs

Radio and showed me a compound displaced double fracture on the back leg. The tibia is broken at one end, the fibula is broken at the other end. Yet I only felt one (big) callus. Cat limps (no weight on leg), is able to turn around in cage (very defensive) and to crouch. How is that possible, with such a severe fracture?

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You may only feel one callus because only one segment has started to heal. You didn't indicate how long ago the injury occurred. You can always follow up, and likely should, with your Vet for X-rays to check how it is healing. I am not surprised he is non-weight bearing on the leg. He can crouch likely because his femur (thigh bone) is fine and if is has been a few weeks and a callus is forming at one of the fracture sites there is now more stability. Also cats are pretty amazing healers. I hope this helps and I wish Bissi the very best!
