My new dog has loose stool and bad gas. Should I give probiotics?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 50 lbs

I recently adopted a dog from the shelter a couple days ago, his stool is not as formed as it should be and he has the worst smelling gas throughout the whole day. I began to read about NaturVet Advanced Probiotics & Enzymes chewables, would that be a good thing to give him or should i try something else? He’s a 50lb lab/chow mix somewhere between 1-2 years old and the shelter said they’ve been feeding him pedigree or whatever they had available so that’s what I’ve been giving him. Thank you.

It is very common for dogs to have some GI upset when first being adopted. It is usually a combination of the stress of adjusting to a new environment and a change in food. I think the ingredients in this product look good and you could start those right away. I would also recommend giving a combination of plain white rice and boiled chicken for a few days. This is a bland diet and easy to digest. Once the signs have improved, you can start to transition Coal from the chicken and rice to the diet you want him on permanently. I would also make sure that he has been properly dewormed. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach and I hope that Coal feels better soon!
