Why does my 9-month-old kitten have a painful belly lump and sore?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 9 months and 9 days old | 4 lbs

Okay so I have a kitten approximately 9months old with a lump forming on the right side of his underbelly below his ribs. It's rather large and seem to cause him a bit of discomfort when picked up. He normally likes being picked up. In the photos provided is a picture of a sore that i found on him about a week or so ago, and in the second, my finger is on the lump I've found. I hope this helps.

Hello and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. What a cutie Chewwy is! The sore could be an infection of yeast or bacteria, ringworm or mites. It will most likely need to be tested by a veterinarian to determine exactly what it is. The lump on the side is concerning if it is painful and growing. At his age an abscess or a hernia are possibilities. I would also recommend getting that examined by a veterinarian so that they know how to treat him. I hope this helps and that Chewwy gets feeling better soon!
