Why is my lovebird's burnt foot still sore and gripping poorly?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Male | unneutered | 0.0816 lbs

My fischers lovebird burnt his foot when he fell into hot cheese pasta sauce. The vet gave me antibiotics & pain killer for 10 days & he healed. It has been 6 weeks now & he favours his other foot & raises the hurt one a lot. I've also noticed he does not completely grip his perch properly with this foot now. Is there anything I can do or give him to improve it?

I think it would be a good idea to schedule a recheck with your vet to make sure there isn't any lasting damage to the foot to explain why Cheeky is still favoring it. There could be some minor nerve damage that still needs to heal and is causing some pain. Providing some larger, flat perches may make it easier for him to rest his feet and perch without it being as uncomfortable as it heals. In the future, it is best to keep Cheeky out of the kitchen, or in his cage, especially while you are cooking or eating to avoid any additional accidents.
