My dog ate a dead bird and too much peroxide. Is he okay?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | unneutered | 46.5 lbs

My dog Cooper ate a dead bird, he ate almost all of it as there's only a piece of meat with feather left. I brought him back in where my mom, being frantic, gave him way too much hydrogen peroxide for his weight. She gave about 3-4 doses of where my thumb is, 1 of the doses being 5mins before the other 2-3. So I'm a bit panicked, he ate a dead bird and he also got too much hydrogen peroxide. I live in Manchester CT and idk what birds commonly carry here. Please help ASAP ;(

Hello. I would not worry about the dead bird. If he did not vomit it up with the peroxide, then his digestive tract will take care of everything else. As for the peroxide. It can be very irritating to the GI tract, especially if he has not vomited. Side effects can include diarrhea, lethargy, protracted vomiting & nausea. The peroxide can actually cause corrosive damage to the lining of the gut, as well as oxidative changes in the blood ( intravascular hemolytic anemia ). If Cooper is at all unwell today, or in the next 4-5 days, you must get him to the veterinarian immediately. I would even suggest that if he has not vomited this much peroxide yet, then take him to your vet now so as to prevent possible problems. I hope that he will not have any problems, but that was a lot of peroxide to give. Take care.
