My bulldog's penis bleeds when aroused. Is it too big for his sheath?

Sometimes when the penis becomes engorged it can become stuck outside of the sheath. This is uncomfortable and the best thing to do is to try to reduce your dog's excitement and keep him calm. The penis should reduce, but if it ever become stuck outside, he should see a vet right away. Sometimes the sheath can cut off blood flow if it remains constricted.

It looks like Spanky might have a urethral prolapse in your picture. I would recommend having him examined by a veterinarian right away since the prolapsed tissue could become damaged and it could affect his ability to urinate normally. A veterinarian might place some suture around the penis if they are able to reduce the prolapse, but other times more in-depth surgery is needed.

Most intact males will get erections from time to time, and this can cause inadvertent trauma to the penis due to pure friction against the penile sheath. Unfortunately the only way to stop this is to either lube the pets penile sheath daily to hopefully help reduce this friction, or to have the pet neutered. But keep in mind it can take up 2 months post-neuter for the testosterone levels to decrease enough to cause a reduction in unwanted sexual behavior. For now, if the bleeding has stopped, then you can try applying a cold compress onto the penile sheath for 5-10 minutes to help alleviate some of the irritation, and apply some KY jelly. However if there is significant swelling then it is best to get Teddy seen by your vet to get him on pet friendly anti-inflammatory medications. Then you can discuss possibly neutering Teddy to avoid this in the future.

You dog is probably suffering from a prostate disease (cancer or inflammation), it's very common in unneutered dogs. i recommend taking him to the vet ASAP, if it is not an advanced cancer then neutering him will solve the problem.

Hades may have an enlarged prostate or prostate inflammation which often causes such bleeding. You can check his penis carefully by moving the sheath off the penis. THe penis should not have any damage, scabs and there should not be any excessive discharge. You may see a small amount of yellowish smegma. If there is an injury, discoloration or a lot of pus, he needs to be seen by your veterinarian again. If there is a chronic problem it may be a good idea to have him neutered as this will make the prostrate shrink and stop excessive purulent discharge.

There is gland at the base of their penis that can get enlarged when excited and not fixed. If his penis was out and this gland was enlarged with blood he may have gotten too excited which caused the increased blood flow to the area. If this is the case the swelling and blood should completely be gone with his penis back in within 30 minutes. If it is not then I would take him to a vet for further treatment

It sounds like he is suffering from paraphimosis, which is an inability to retract the penis back into the sheath. This can quickly turn into an emergency situation, as constricting of the blood flow will lead to a larger engorgement of the penis, necrosis (dead tissue), and potential damage to the urethra. If his penis hasn't been out too long (less than an hour), you can try to put it back yourself. First, thoroughly clean the penis, making sure there is no foreign material (such as fur) that is wrapped around the penis. Take a bag of frozen veggies wrapped in a towel, and apply it to the penis for five minutes at a time to try to reduce the swelling. Packaged peas work very well because they are mobile around the penis. Then apply a lubricant such as KY Jelly onto the penis, and very gently try to move the penis back into the sheath. If the bleeding from Lucky's penis has gotten worse and/or not resolved at all you may need to bring him back to your vet for a recheck. The penis and prepuce are very vascular (meaning they have lots of blood vessels) and so can bleed easily. If the bleeding hasn't subsided at all there may be a larger vessel that is damaged that may need to be sutured closed to prevent any further bleeding. I would be sure to keep the cone on Lucky as well until you get everything figured out so he won't lick excessively down there and cause more irritation.
