My dog's skin condition keeps recurring. How do I fix it for good?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 104 lbs

My dog has had a skin condition since June. I took him to the vet multiple times and they gave my allergy medicine which never cleared it up. The last time I took him they gave him an antifungal and it cleared up for about a month and a half. Now it's back. I'm at a loss of what it can be and how to get rid of it for good. (No behavior changes, no diet changes)

This looks like a skin infection to me. Dogs get these often from laying on something irritating or from dampness. I recommend bathing the area weekly with an antibacterial and anti fungal shampoo. You may need to change where Mack lays as allergies can start the irritation, then the bacteria and fungus can develop in the skin. If it doesn’t clear up with the baths then I would ask for a medication refill. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Mack.
