My dog's breath suddenly smells bad. Is Doxycycline causing it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 3 years and 5 months old | 9 lbs

My dog's breath suddenly smell like a musty, old cat box. We have cats but she doesn't get into their litter box. It's always been covered. She's never had bad breath before. Her teeth are white and in great shape. She is on Doxycycline right now for a positive Anaplasmosis test. Does that have anything to do with it? As weird as it sounds, her breath smells like a port-o-john!

The most common reason we will see a dog suddenly develop bad breath would be that something abnormal is stuck somewhere in their mouth (such as a stick or piece of food) or they have a tooth root infection under the gum, so it is not visible. Doxycyline is actually used to treat pockets of infection under the gum and to help control periodontal disease, so I would not expect that to cause any problems with bad breath. I would start with having your veterinarian perform a thorough oral examination to see if they can find any hints of what is going on with Scout. Good luck! I hope that was helpful.
