Why does my dog have purple bumps near her nipples after heat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 11 months and 25 days old | 7 lbs

So I found this on my dog a couple days after her first period. She will turn 1 years old on the 14th of January. I am able to grab it, it's a little bump. The bumps have a purple color to them, one of the bumps is under one of her nipples but the others are a bit higher and not on the nipples. She has about 3 and they are all different sizes as you can see in the pictures. I would like to know if I should be concerned, what are they and what course of action should I take next?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If the masses are near her mammary glands they could be cysts or increase in normal mammary tissue in response to hormones associated with her heat cycle. If the growths persist past her heat cycle I recommend that you have your Vet examine them I hope this helps!

I think the increase in blood flow is going to her nipples from being in heat. It is very common for the mammary gland to get bigger during a heat cycle. The small area you are concerned about does not appear to be infected or an serious issue. I would monitor it for now and if getting worse consider a consult.
