My dogs are distressed after CO alarm. Is it gas or just the noise?

Our carbon monoxide detector went off and we thought it was the battery so we just took the batteries out. To be sure it wasn't just the batteries, we placed another one within the same area. It didn't beep but I'm still concerned. Cooper (who before this, never coughed) started to cough and basically freak out. Max also freaked out. They both were shaking and crying and you can definitely tell they were in distress. Maybe it was because of the loud noise? All of this happened 15 minutes ago.

Poor babies! This is most likely due to the stress of the situation. You can take them out to get some fresh air if you are concerned about the carbon monoxide. If they were truly affected by the gas then you would also be feeling it. These detectors are SO loud to us - they are even louder to dogs. Give them some time to calm down. If they continue to be in distressed or if they are ever labored breathing then I would have your vet take a look at them. I hope this helps!
