My older dog is aggressive to my new puppy. How can I make them get along?

Hi! I’ve recently got a new 5 month old golden retriever puppy. My yorkie bobby has an arguementative temperament around other dogs but got along fine with my dog buttons who passed away in December. We brought both on a walk and they were fine playing either each other. When we got home bobby was having none of it. The pup is very playful. We took them on another walk recently and they didn’t get along at all bobby kept stripping teeth and growling. How do I get them to get along. Thanks, Hazel

Hi There. It sounds like Bobby is trying to establish his dominance over the new puppy. This is quite normal and provided there are no fights, may resolve with time. There are some great resources on Dr. Sophia Yins website (draophiatin.com) that discuss dominance aggression. You may also want to consider working with a certified trainer or a veterinary behaviorist. You can find one in your area on www.acvb.org.
