My dog ate something. Is vomiting within an hour effective for poison?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Basset Hound | Female | spayed | 2 years and 10 months old | 55 lbs

Just got back from er vet with my dog. At 9:50 I saw her eat something in the side yard so immediately took her to induce vomiting. Macaroni and cheese cake up. I suspect it was from the kids across the street as they travel through my vacant lot to their grandparents and I live in a secluded subdivision with mainly elderly. If it were poison woukd she likely be ok since it was up within 45-min of ingestion? I don’t believe there was poison at all but I stay paranoid about my baby.

I'm so sorry you had such a scary experience with Harper Grace. Inducing vomiting is the most important part of preventing a toxicity from most poisons because it does not give the body time to absorb the toxin. Generally, we try to get a dog to vomit within an hour, so it sounds like you were within that window and would have been able to prevent absorption of any toxins, so I would not anticipate any problems, but certainly contact your veterinarian if you have any concerns. I hope that was helpful and answered your questions. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
