Dog ate grape, vet induced vomiting. What aftercare is needed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Papillon | Male | neutered | 3 years and 2 months old | 5.3 lbs

I took my papillon to the emergency vet to have vomiting induced, poor pup vomited grape and was given fluids and anti nausea meds via injection. We were told just to monitor and to not allow food for the next few hours, is there any other post operative instructions I should follow or signs I should be aware of?

I'm so glad you took Peanut to the emergency clinic right away and that they were able to make him vomit up the grape. The concern for the next few hours is that since they gave him medication to vomit the grape, some dogs will continue to be nauseated (despite anti-nausea medication) and will vomit again if fed or allowed too much water. So, that is the concern for the next few hours. If there is a possibility that Peanut ate any additional grapes, I would recommend having blood checked in 3 days to make sure his kidney values are normal. Otherwise, as long as Peanut returns to his normal appetite and energy level without any vomiting, there aren't any special instructions for grape ingestion that was immediately vomited. I hope that was helpful and answered your questions. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
