My dog scoots with anal discharge but acts normal. Should I worry?

Hi Dr. Laura Johnson, Thanks for the fast feedback. By the way, I did a check and its not coming from the vagina(FYI, she is on heat now) Yesterday she did scooting during her evening walk/toilet. The discharge from her anus isn't dripping on the floor and neither its attracting any flies. After her scooting, its seems to be reduced. What doesn't panic me is in her attitude.. She look fine with her daily routine(eating, normal toilet with no discomfort ,doesn't lick and scooting continuously)

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Oh good! I am glad there isn't purulent discharge from her vagina. Most dogs with an anal gland infection do feel fine. They just scoot and sometimes the discharge will leak out. I still recommend an appointment to have the anal glands expressed. I have seen infected and impacted anal glands rupture through the skin. It isn't an expensive visit and will hopefully make her feel better! I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It sounds like Maggie has a possible anal gland infection. I have seen the material leak out when they are infected. I recommend having the anal glands expressed by a Vet. If they are indeed infected then she should be prescribed antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications. Full anal glands, infected or not, can cause scooting. Also since Maggie isn’t spayed be sure the yellow discharge isn’t coming from her vagina. I hope this helps and wish Maggie a speedy recovery!
