Is it safe to breed my 4-5 year old chihuahua for the first time?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | unspayed

My chihuahua, Diamond, is about 4-5 years old. I want to breed her for the first time but as usual, I am concerned that she will have major complications during labor or the pregnancy. When I first got her, the vet said she is healthy enough to breed, however it is about a year later now and I still want to make sure. She is healthy and never had any major complications except for getting a tooth pulled.

Hi there, Breeding can be quite the undertaking and you're correct to have concerns. Chihuahua's have narrow birth canals and often need c sections to get their puppies out. I'm not sure how much she weighs, but a difficult birth certainly could occur. I would consider whether you want to take the risk of breeding and go from there. If you are too worried about it, I would recommend having her spayed and not having to worry about something elective affecting her health. I hope that helps and thanks for using Pet Coach!
