My dog screams in pain when moving. Is it arthritis or serious injury?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | 10 years old | 98 lbs

For the past few days, Bowser has been occasionally yelping or whining (obviously from pain) when he would make certain movements (ex. Trying to lay down, or while trying to stand after laying down) But it has gotten considerably worse. His yelps/ whines have evolved into "screaming". I think he may have aurthritus, so I was wondering if a severe case could cause these screaming epidoes. Possible broken rib, dislocated joint, broken bone? No apparent injuries. He prefers standing.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Bowser! I think the progressive nature and the severity of his pain makes arthritis a little more unlikely. I tend to see that kind of severe pain with neck or back pain or with a bone tumor. But dogs with bone tumors definitely limp on the effective leg, so if you are not seeing that then it is unlikely. Bowser needs an appointment tomorrow with your Vet. If he does have neck or back pain it tends to be treated with either non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, a muscle relaxant and either gabapentin or tramadol. Please do not start any human OTC pain medications because they will interfere with the above medication protocol. I hope this helps and I wish Bowser the best!
