Why is my senior dog still lethargic on antibiotics for infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 12 years and 10 months old | 15 lbs

12 year old Shih Tzu, has been on antibiotics since Thursday, vet said it was 24-48 hours to see him have some improvement; I was told he has and infection and heart murmur, could she have lied to me, she said he would get better, yet he is still lethargic. He does not even get up to pee, had to buy dog diapers. I am so worried that she lied and my little furball is actually dying. Please help.

Hi, I am really sorry to hear that Miko is poorly and making little progress. I am sure the vet has not lied to you, or tried to keep anything secret. It could be that Miko has two conditions at the same time or that the antibiotics are not completely effective against the condition. If you think he is getting worse and your vet is closed, I would recommend a trip to your local emergency clinic. You could get a second opinion on Miko and could get something to make him perk up. All patients as they get old, they are more fragile and can take longer to respond to treatment. If Miko should be too poorly to be helped you could have an honest conversation with the vets too, as it is not fair to make him suffer. Hope Miko can get better, and that you find the right answers to your questions.
