My dog gets anxious when we argue. How can I reduce his stress?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 11 months old | 83 lbs

I am facing severe problems in my marriage and our dog, 2 year’s old lab acts like a child would , watching his/ her parents fighting constantly . His breathing gets heavy and he has the shivers . Until my situation is solved, what can I do to make it less painful for him ?

Hi, thank you for contacting us through the forum. I understand this is a rough time for everyone involved. I hope things will settle again soon for you and Jack. With regards to what you can do for him, is there a place that is just Jack’s resting place or that he could become so ? A room where he can go and not be affected by the noises around him ? Ideally this would be where he chooses to go when you are arguing. There are some natural remedies that can be tried to reduce anxiety and stress in dogs, and one that does not have any consequences is Zylkene. Also a DAP adaptor plugged in the room where he sleeps might be an idea. The big difficulty in this, is that arguments are unpredictable and therefore there is not much that can be done to prevent this as such. However by administering Zylkene and using DAP the general level of stress for him can be reduced. I hope that this helps Jack, and that you both find deserved peace and harmony in 2018.
