My poodle's nipple is red & swollen after first heat. Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Toy Poodle | Female | unspayed | 7 months and 12 days old | 7 lbs

I have a 7 month old poodle who just a few days finally stopped bleeding from her first heat. Today I noticed that her upper right nipple is very red and swollen. Should I be concerned..She is eating and playing normal. All her other nipples seem fine

Hello. The nipple is definitely red & inflamed, but this does not always indicate the presence of an infection. For now, you can rub a little 1% hydrocortisone on the skin 2-3 times a day, & if it is not looking any better by early in the week, please have your veterinarian take a look. Thank you.

It may be swollen from the hormonal change. She may have scraped it also. From the photo this looks like it’s nothing to be overly concerned. The nipples should get smaller again in three to four weeks after her heat cycle is finished. If this looks worse it’s always a good idea to get a veterinarian to look at it.
