Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 3.9 lbs
My 15 year old chihuahua averaged a weight around 4.1 lbs for many years. The last few months of his life he dropped to 3.9. Is this cause for concern for a dog his size? I’m asking because I have another chihuahua that’s the same size he was and I want to keep an eye out for her.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. If you are noticing a loss of weight, especially at this age, I would recommend having his blood tested to make sure that there are no changes on his bloodwork that might indicate a systemic disease or infection. If blood work is normal then an abdominal ultrasound would be my next recommendation to find out why he is losing weight. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

He looks like he is in healthy condition, so I don't think you need to be too concerned. If he is having diarrhea, vomiting, a big drop in his appetite, if he seems short of breath or has had any coughing, or if he seems like his attitude is different--not as playful, is sleeping a lot more, seems lethargic, etc-- then take him in to your vet. At his age, it would be wise to consider having some bloodwork run just as a senior screening to make sure everything is looking good. Thank you for asking Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
