How to feed an overweight guinea pig when her cage mate is small?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Unknown - Small Animal | Female | spayed | 6 months and 5 days old | 2.2 lbs

My guinea pig, Shay, is a 5 mo. female. She weighs around 2.2 pounds already, and she is very long. I read that reducing treats and monitoring the amount of hay given could help, but the problem is that I have another 5 mo. female in the cage who is quite small. Is this an unhealthy weight for her age? If so, how can I watch her weight while also providing enough food for my other piggie?

It sounds like the larger pig is getting more of the food you put in the enclosure and as a result one is growing too quickly and one may not be growing enough. Probably the easiest thing to do would be to separate the pigs when you are feeding them pellets or treats. You can leave the hay in the enclosure while they are together. Also make sure you are only feeding fresh veggies with very occasional treats. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
