My dog has mites. How long for Simparica to work & be mite-free?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cocker Spaniel | Male | neutered | 34 lbs

We adopted our lovely Tyson in may 2017 who came with ticks and mites? Vets assumed allergies and yes fleas were present. Managed fleas and ticks still itching! No one knows how long he has struggled with mites prior. Vet diagnosed sarc mange on 2nd scrape. We are approaching round three of simparica 1/12. I can say he scratches less. How can we stop itch and even be sure he is mite free. How long can he take simparica to rid mites?

Thanks for using PetCoacb! Simparica can be taken longterm. Usually a dog with sarcoptic mange is retested after 2 treatments and considered mite free after testing negative 2 months in a row though this protocol may vary depending on the veterinarian. Medications such as prednisone can be used to decrease the itch in the meantime. Good luck and have a great day!
