My Chihuahua's knee pain after surgery. How to help her in winter?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 2 years old | 7 lbs

My 2 year old Chihuahua was born with pallar luxation and born with no knee caps. She had surgery at 1 yr old because she couldn't walk all the sudden. Surgery went great and has had no problems since. It's now winter and I have noticed she doesn't like to move as fast as she normally does and licks often at her leg that had the surgery . We was given some medication to give her when needed and a weekly bone vitimain. Is there anything else that I could to help her during the winter so her leg?

Kloe probably has pain and stiffness from the surgery. Giving the pain medication as needed is good. Also massaging her leg to relax the muscles can help. Short frequent leash walks will keep her more comfortable and maintain the muscle support for her knee. In the photo I can see that Kloe would benefit from weight loss. Losing 10% of her body weight will reduce the strain on her knees and is equal to giving a full dose of medication for pain relief. It is important to keep her active with walking but minimize the running and jumping as often these dogs will develop problems in the other rear leg over time. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Kloe.
