Why is my dog coughing with a honking sound, especially when playing?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | 8 years and 8 months old | 5.5 lbs

My dog keeps coughing and it makes kind of a honking sound. It’s worse when she plays. This is the 3rd day now. I give her a quarter of a Benadryl and it seems to go away. Should I be worried?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Goodness Princess is cute! If Princess is eating, playing, isn't lethargic and isn't vomiting you can continue the benadryl since it helps. If the cough is still present monday I would have her examined by your Vet. Possible causes are: Kennel cough, heartworm disease, collapsing trachea, heart disease, allergies, or other infections. I hope this helps and I wish Princess the very best!
