My senior dog took Tramadol. Did it cause her kidney failure?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Female | spayed

My 15 year old dog was prescribed Tramadol about 4 weeks ago for neurological pain relief. She has been on many medications for years for heart murmur. Also Denosyl for liver. 14 days ago she was a very happy, energetic, good appetite cavalier. 7 days ago she lethargic and wouldn't eat her breakfast. I took her straight to the vet and they did blood tests and said her kidneys were struggling. They set up IV fluids and after 4 days they told me that I had to euthanase her. did Tramadol do this?

I am so very sorry for your loss of Lucy. Tramadol is generally a very safe drug and does not have the risk for liver or kidney damage the way some other medications do. Unfortunately, it sounds like Lucy's kidneys may have just started failing coincidentally after she had been on Tramadol for 3 weeks. I have attached more information on Tramadol below. https://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=1815 I hope that helps with your questions.
