My older dog is shaking all over. Why is her whole body trembling?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | 12 years and 10 months old | 18 lbs

My 12 year old Dachshund is shaking. Her whole body, not just your legs. She's not throwing up, dizzy or has diarrhea. The last two days she's kind of started shivering and then it goes away. I don't know if she's cold or if this is distemper or what, but she is prone to have allergies and she blows through her nose a lot.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. If she is unvaccinated for distemper, I would potentially consider this as a possibility but in older animals, distemper is not commonly seen. She may be uncomfortable from something (painful) or an infection / systemic disease. If adjusting the temperature to keep her warm does not help, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine her so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
