My Shih Tzu reverse sneezes. Is it dangerous? What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 3 months old | 13 lbs

My Shih Tzu is two years old he turned two on September, and today at around 6:30 a.m we woke up with a sound like he couldn’t breath, I searched it up and it said it’s a “reverse sneeze” I was wondering could he die from it? What could I do to help him if it happens again? This was the first time? Anything I could do to prevent it? Also are his color gums and tongue normal?

It is highly unlikely that Max would die from reverse sneezing. I cannot say it's impossible but the chance of that happening is probably less than 0.001%. I have been in the veterinary industry for over 20 years and I have never seen reverse sneezing cause any severe medical problems. You really can't do anything about it when it's happening other than to try to calm him down. It will pass on it's own despite what you do or don't do. It really looks worse than it is. There is no way to prevent an episode other than keeping his excitement to a minimum and to minimize allergens in the air by using a HEPA air purifier in the environment. There is no guarantee these things will decrease his episodes but they definitely won't hurt anything. https://www.walmart.com/search/?query=hepa%20air%20purifier&typeahead=hepa%20air Yes, his gum and tongue color are normal. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
