My dog's armpit lump is growing, red, and she keeps licking it. Vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 11 years old | 90 lbs

I have a 10yr female mix breed with a growth in her front left leg pit. She has had it for months, but within the past few days it has grown slightly in size and now she licks it constantly. It also now looks angry and is bothering her. Question is, she she go to the vet or will it calm down? I love my dog, but I am very short on funds! I will do what I need to, some how. Thank you in advance Larry

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a benign or malignant growth. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Good luck and have a good day!
