Diabetic dog losing hair and shedding. Is it thyroid or Cushing's?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 8 years and 4 months old | 25 lbs

My dog has just recently been diagnosed with diabetes in Dec. they had started him on 7 units then increased to 12 units because it seems the lower dosage was not working. We are still monitoring the 12 units. He was tested for Cushings but he does not have that. My question now my Yorkie/ Terrier has started loosing his hair around his face, ears and neck and excessive shedding. He is 8 he has never shredded like that before. I asked my vet if it could be that he might have hyperthyroidism

Jax is very cute! In dogs HYPERthyroidism is very rare. However HYPOthyroidism is much more common and can certainly cause hair loss or unusual hair patterns. It would be a good idea to have Jax's thyroid levels checked. Cushing's disease can also cause hair loss so it may be a good idea to have him rechecked for Cushing's. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach and best to you and Jax!
