My dog ate cooked chicken bones. Should I rush her to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Female | unspayed | 33 lbs

Hi, my dog just ate a whole roast chicken and I think she also ate the bones. Will she be okay, or should I take her to the vet first thing in the morning? In case you’re wondering she’s an Australian Shepherd and she is about a year old

If it's possible/likely that Duchess ate the bones, then she should go to the vet for x-rays. The problem with cooked bones is that they can easily splinter when chewed and puncture the stomach or intestines as they pass through, so you should always seek medical attention for ingestion of cooked bones. Good luck! I hope Duchess is OK. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
