My rescue dog bites his tail and runs in circles. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 5 months old | 63.3 lbs

We notice that our rescue dog of 2-1/2 years, a lab/basenji mix will frequently grab at his curled up tail. Also in the backyard he'll run around in a wide circle for several minutes. We play with him and give him lots of our time, so we can't figure out why he's doing this.

Hello, sorry to hear about Jaxx. This can be associated with abnormal sensation at his tail either due to an old injury or something such as flea bites. This may also be associated with abnormalities of her anus, such as impacted anal glands or an anal gland abscess. More rarely, this may be associated with a main neurologic disease such as a seizure. Hope this helps and best of luck.
