What are the chances of a cat's eyes recovering from severe infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Male | unneutered | 9 lbs

I am fostering a cat for our local shelter. Rhe cat's eyes were completely matted shut frim conjunctivitis. He's been on antibiotics for 5 days now. The discharge and inflammation is much better now and he can open his eyes wirh ease, but his eyeballs look horrendous. One is bright red, the other is dull gray. His vision is affected , but he is not blind. He doesn't seem to be in a grest deal of discomfort. When an eye infection gets this bad is there a chance his eyes will recover?

Yes, there is almost always a chance that the eye will recover, even if only partially. when i took one of my cats in 10 years ago i was sure she was blind, but somehow one eye recovered almost completely within several weeks of treatment, and she is still seeing well from that eye until this day. sometimes one antibiotic eye ointment might not be enough and additional eye drops might be added to the treatment plan.
