My senior dog has a swollen face. Is sedation safe for a bad tooth?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 13 years old

My dogs face is swollen so presuming a bad tooth, I don’t want to take him vets as he won’t let them look so they will suggest sedation but he’s 13 years old and last time this happened a few years ago he passed out b4 they sedated him so don’t think he will survive the sedation. Is there anything I can give him to help his tooth like human amoxicillin? Thank you

If Sid does have a tooth root abscess, he will likely need to have the tooth extracted. This will require anesthesia. At the same time, the rest of the teeth can be evaluated and xrayed and then cleaned to prevent or slow the progression of periodontal disease. Antibiotics alone may not be sufficient to resolve the condition. Even though he is a senior pet, a complete physical exam along with blood work will allow your veterinarian to tailor the anesthetic protocol for maximum safety. Medicating Sid without the advice of your veterinarian would not be recommended. Inappropriate antibiotic use may lead to resistant bacteria and may complicate any underlying condition.
