My cat keeps scratching his itchy wound. How long for the e-collar?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered

My cat got a scratch before Xmas and we took him to the vet on Xmas Eve and they gave him an antibiotic shot and said to see if he would leave it to heal. He didn't, so on the 27th Dec we put a buster collar on him. It seemed to be healing ok and we took the collar off on 1st to clean it and he managed to scratch it again and make it bleed. He seems really unhappy and is desperate to go outside. How much longer do you think we’ll have to keep it on?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Basil! I would call your Vet and ask if they think a steroid injection or steroid pills are appropriate. Based on your description I think the area is itchy and he will continue to scratch the area and open it up. I think some steroids will provide relief and allow you to take the E-collar off sooner. Otherwise I wouldn't take the E-collar off until the scab falls off, which could be 2 weeks or more. I hope this helps and I wish Basil the very best!
