My puppy won't walk after dewclaw stitch removal. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 4 months and 24 days old | 30 lbs

My 4 month old pup got his dewclaws removed (per vet recommendation). He got his stitches removed today and now he's not putting any weight on his hind left leg. I've massaged all joints and checked his paw and there's no problem there. He's overall happy and unbothered but I guess I'm just a worried pet parent. Could this be anything serious since it's just one foot and not both?

Hi there. The lameness could be related to the dewclaw removal but it may be a completely separate problem (luxating patella, sprain/strain, ligament injury, etc). I don't think it is an emergency at all but I would suggest you get Max back to your vet for a recheck exam. I am not sure if it is serious or not - it depends on the underlying cause of the lameness. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
