Should new lumps on my dog be biopsied during scheduled ACL surgery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | neutered | 8 years and 1 month old

My 8 yr old golden retriever is scheduled for ACL surgery on Thursday. I was petting him this evening and noticed 2 new nickel sized lumps alongside his spine that are hard and immovable. Should I address this prior to surgery or have them biopsied during surgery? I am concerned as I lost my last golden to cancer 8 years ago. Thank you

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You should definitely bring the lumps to your vet's attention on Thursday. As Beau will already be under anesthesia, which is usually the bulk of the cost of the procedure, it may be wise to have the lumps removed at the same time. Your vet can also take a fine needle aspirate, or a small sample of cells, if you elect not to have the lumps removed completely. I hope all goes well for Beau on Thursday!
