My dog has an eye infection, but it's not bothering him. Vet or home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 12 years and 4 months old | 10 lbs

My Shih Tzu seems to have an infection around his eye. I thought it was allergies at first but am now worried. The eye itself looks okay and isn’t bothering him. He isn’t rubbing the eye or anything. Should he see a vet or can I treat this at home?

Hello, sorry to hear about Rylie. That eye problem should definitely be evaluated by your veterinarian. This can still be associated with allergies, however other causes may include parasites and fungal infections. Your veterinarian may obtain a sample of the skin cells and hair to determine if there is an infection vs if this is associated with allergies. Hope this helps and best of luck.
