My dog swallowed a huge turkey piece whole. Should I be worried?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Pinscher | Female | unspayed | 12 years and 7 months old | 29 lbs

Two days ago my dog ate a "huge" piece of turkey breast left over from Christmas. She must of swallowed it whole because it was hard for her "gulping" it down her throat. She seems kinda different since. Should I be worried?

Just turkey breast meat should be able to dissolve in the stomach without much trouble. Very large quantities of any food can be uncomfortable until they are digested. If there are bones in it, it could cause irritation to the gut as it travels. If there was fat in it, it could lead to pancreatitis a few hours up to a few days after ingestion. I would continue to monitor Lita's appetite and for vomiting and/or diarrhea. If anything is still of in a day or two, she should get checked out by a vet.
