Why is my dog's erect penis stuck, causing him to arch and struggle?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | 3 years and 7 months old | 109 lbs

My 3 year old male pitt bull is having an erect penis with tense testicles to the point that he arches his back and cannot walk. The red part of the penis only shows a tip with some discharge but will not come all of the way out? ( sorry do not know the medical terms).

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If he is getting erections while playing or humping, then all play should be stopped until he calms down and the humping should be prevented. If you are not planning on breeding him it would be best and may help prevent these episodes if he get neutered. There isn't much concern unless his penis is swollen and enlarged outside of the prepuce for more than 1 hour. If he never extrudes the penis when it is erect then just try to calm him down. I hope this helps and I wish you and Lion the best!
