My dog guards his bone aggressively. Is this normal behavior?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 6 months and 19 days old | 26 lbs

We gave our sweet bongo a bone ( cow leg bone boiled ) as a new year present . And as soon as we have it to him he didn’t lick it but started gaurding it and was not letting anything come closer to it so it . I have never seen this boy even getting angry even at the owners for a second . Is that normal for dogs as my mom really loves him and now got frightened as if he will show that same anger at her too . He became normal as soon as we took the bone by diverting his attention . Can you advise?

Some dogs can become very aggressive or protective over objects they really love. Since he is young this behavior can be prevented. I would encourage to have him neutered as the aggression could get worse as he gets older. Also I would not give him that type of bone again. You may want to try a different type of bone or no bones at all. I hope this helps!
