My dog is shaking, inactive, and I gave him aspirin. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 65 lbs

My dog is shaking and not being as active as usual. He is eating and using the bathroom fine. I changed his food recently but his stool hasn’t changed and he seems to enjoy the food. He hasn’t been in any accident recently. He is a German Shepherd, and has had issues with his ears since we got him. We have given him aspirin, but it does not seem to help. He just wants to cuddle up and sleep. Our climate has changed quite a bit in the last week to 0 degree weather.

First of all, NEVER give a dog any human medications unless directed by a veterinarian. Aspirin is extremely irritation to the stomach and will cause gastric bleeding very easily in dogs. If the weather has gotten very cold where you are, this could be affecting his attitude. The change in food may have put him a little off balance even though he's not showing any apparent symptoms. I recommend getting him in to see your vet, just to make sure there isn't something underlying that is causing him to be lethargic and subdued. If it's enough of a change to concern you, it's worth getting your vet to check just to be on the safe side.
