My dog has pink mucus in her stool with diarrhea and gas. Vet needed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chesapeake Bay Retriever | Female | spayed | 2 years and 6 months old | 60 lbs

Hello! My dog had pink mucus in her stool today. It was very slimy. string-like, and small. We noticed some green mucus and diarrhea yesterday. In the past 2 days we have noticed that she has had an increase in smelly gas. She hasn’t had a change in her diet. She has no significant history of health issues other than currently being evaluated for a slight limp in her leg. Is this something we should rush her in to see a vet for? Or should we keep an eye out for any other specific symptoms?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Khaleesi! If she is eating well, normal energy and isn't vomiting I don't think you need to rush her off to the Vet. If the stool continues to look like that schedule an appointment with your Vet when they open tomorrow. Blood indicates inflammation in the colon. Causes can be from intestinal parasites. medications, viral or bacterial infection, dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, food allergy/intolerance, new food/treat/human food. If the diarrhea is severe and she is having accidents consider fasting her for 12-24 hours then start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools. I hope this helps and I wish you and Khaleesi the very best!

No, the amount of pinkish mucus in Zarah's stool isn't normal. The extra mucus is typically part of the lining of the colon that can slough off and trigger a little bit of bleeding, as seen in the pink-tinge. The fact that Zarah's stool is also loose at times makes me think that there's likely an underlying problem, such as intestinal parasites, inflammatory bowel disease, or exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. I think Zarah should be examined by her vet and at minimum, have a stool sample sent out to the lab to check for evidence of parasites, as eggs and cysts are microscopic. I hope that everything goes well!

I'm glad to hear that Winston is still eating, drinking, and acting normally despite his mucousy diarrhea. Odds are good that he either ate something that didn't agree with him or he picked up a virus causing a bit of gastroenteritis. You can try to feed him a bland diet of either boiled white meat chicken or lean ground beef mixed 50/50 with plain white rice until his appointment. For a dog his size, Winston should eat about 4.5-5 cups of this mixture per day, divided into smaller meals. I know that sounds like a huge quantity, but there's much more water in this bland diet than there is in kibble. Keep an eye out for any worsening of his signs, such as a loss of appetite, lethargy, vomiting, or worsening diarrhea. If any of these changes occur, your best bet is to take him to a veterinary ER for prompt evaluation. I hope that Winston feels better soon!
