My dog has bloody diarrhea after dental surgery. What should I do now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 7.5 lbs

Dog had dental procedure last week and was prescribed ClinDrop. He started to have bloody diarrhea so I discontinued the Clindrops 2 days ago....bloody diarrhea continues. (7 pound, 10 year old neutered chihuahua had a normal blood/chem panel as part of surgery last week..)

Unfortunately, bloody diarrhea often does not respond to at home treatment and may require a trip to your veterinarian. Since your veterinarian is likely closed today, you can certainly try a bland diet of 1/2 cooked white rice and 1/2 cooked white meat chicken (no skin or bones). If the bloody diarrhea continues with this diet, I would contact your veterinarian tomorrow. If Gumbo becomes lethargic, does not want to eat or the bloody diarrhea worsens, I would have him evaluated today. Good luck! I hope that was helpful and Gumbo feels better. soon Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
