My cat won't stop biting and pulling out her fur. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 3 years and 8 months old | 5 lbs

Cat wont stop pulling out fur! We've taken her to the vet and they said it's not stress and she might be allergic to fleas, to put polysporin on it, and give her a cone so she doesn't lick it. We checked for fleas and so did the vet but neither of us could find any fleas or flea signs like poo in her fur, none! It's been a week or two since then and if anything it's only gotten worse, the second we take off the cone she goes back to biting. I don't want her in this cone forever, please help!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Lilly! I would have Lilly rechecked. At a bare minimum she needs medications (prednisolone taper) to relieve the itching. I would request that a skin scrape be performed to rule out skin mites. They are microscopic and need to be looked at under a microscope. I would also culture the area for ringworm. She may have allergies and I would suggest trying to change her diet first. Chicken is the number one allergic protein so try to change her to all venison or salmon diet. You will need to give the diet 2-3 months to see if it works. If mites, ringworm and food allergies have been rule out then I would consider it behavioral and start her on prozac. I hope this helps and I wish you and Lilly the very best! Happy New Year!
