My neutered puppy's erection won't go down after humping. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 4 months and 26 days old | 24 lbs

Hi my 5 month old fixed puppy hound mix recently had an erection that wouldn’t go away from humping our neighbors dog for a few minutes. He had red rocket that wouldn’t go away for 10-15 minutes and there was some blood. it eventually went away after we separated the dogs and we cleaned the area with water and antibacterial soap and it’s not bleeding anymore. Is there anything else we should be doing. I plan to call the vet when they open on Tuesday after the holiday.

No, there is nothing else to do at this point other than to monitor him for any continued bleeding from the penis or blood in the urine. Dogs actually have a bone in their penis called the os penis and they can fracture it during mating/humping behaviors. The fracture, if bad enough, can lacerate the urethra causing a bad problem. He really shouldn't be doing this behavior at this young age. They don't reach sexual maturity until a minimum of 6 months age. If he is humping it is more likely a play or dominance behavior. I think a vet exam on Tuesday is a good idea as long as he seems OK til then.
