My dog has reflux and nausea after pancreatitis. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bichon Frise | Male | 5 years and 8 months old | 20 lbs

My dog was hospitalized 6 weeks ago for 1 night with IBD flare and acute pancreatitis. He has improved but last week I noticed more reflux symptoms (lip smacking, hacks 1-2x daily). He’s been on Pepcid but has not helped completely. Thursday the vet had me start metoclopromide and omeprazole. Thursday night he vomited and 2x more on Friday. I then stopped omep. Vomit stopped but now lip smacks, yawning, stretching, hacking, inactivity. Good appetite. Now on bland diet in small meals. What do Ido?

I would recommend restarting the omeprazole and taking Quigley back to this vet when they reopen after the holiday. He may need some pain medication, anti-nausea medication, or further hospitalization to help deal with the pancreatitis. It can be hard to get that under control. If he stops eating, it would be wise to take him to the emergency room over the holiday. Best of luck, I hope Quigley is feeling better soon!
