My cat ate tampons, is vomiting, and acting sick. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 10 months and 6 days old | 10 lbs

I have a 10 month old male cat, I woke this morning to him vomiting and is is just fluid, light brownish smelly bile? I looked and found that there was a puke pile with 3 of my tampons in my basement. He is now laying behind my toilet, acting very quiet and clearly doesn’t feel well. Only vet open on New Year’s Eve is emergency clinic which I cannot afford. What do I do now?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Pet Coach. I am very sorry to hear about Pippin being so sick. If Pippin vomited pieces of tampon, this is a very common bathroom product that can cause intestinal obstruction. I understand that it is a holiday, however, I must recommend that you at least have Pippin examined today for a possible obstruction. You can discuss payment options with the emergency hospital before or after the exam depending on how critical he is. I would be very concerned to have him not be seen for at least two more days. If this is serious, waiting that long could cause big problems for Pippin.
